Verdict

British Gas EV Power is a dependable choice if you want the comfort of a big-six provider with EV-specific rates. The 9p/kWh rate and 5-hour window are workable rather than competitive: EDF GoElectric is two pence cheaper across seven hours, and Octopus Intelligent Go edges it on both price and smart features. Best for loyal British Gas customers, or anyone who wants the Hive ecosystem and the 6.75p Power+ rate that comes with it.

What the rate means in practice.

British Gas EV Power — until recently sold as Electric Drivers — is one of the big-six alternatives to Octopus for EV-specific tariffs. It offers a 5-hour off-peak window from midnight to 5am at 9p/kWh: a penny above Octopus Intelligent Go, two above EDF GoElectric, and the same five hours as Octopus Go. If you're already a British Gas customer or prefer dealing with a larger, more established energy provider, this is a solid option.

Best for: Existing British Gas customers who want an EV tariff without switching provider, or those who prefer a big-six energy company over newer challengers.

How It Works

The tariff provides a simple two-rate structure: a low rate from midnight to 5am for overnight charging, and a standard rate for the rest of the day. Like Octopus Go, there's no smart scheduling — you set your Tesla or charger timer to start at midnight, and it charges at the cheap rate until 5am. The 5-hour window gives you enough time to add roughly 35kWh on a 7kW charger (about 120 miles of range).

Who It Suits

EV Power works well for anyone doing typical daily driving under 120 miles. Five hours is the shortest window in this list — EDF now runs seven — so it suits smaller batteries and steady mileage rather than a Model S run flat. British Gas also offers the Hive smart home ecosystem, so if you're already invested in Hive products, keeping your energy with British Gas keeps everything under one roof.
