Reading the October 2026 round

Cheap rates barely moved. Peak rates did.

The headline change on 1 October was the VAT holiday: 0% on domestic electricity until 31 March 2027. That alone takes about 5% off every rate, which is why several off-peak figures fell a few tenths of a penny without the supplier doing anything. EDF GoElectric moved from 6.99p to 6.66p that way and stays the cheapest fixed window we track.

Octopus went the other way on its new 12-month products. Intelligent Go’s off-peak rate came down to 7.6p, but its peak rate rose from 31.64p to 36.6p, ten pence above the cap. Octopus Go’s off-peak rate went up to 9.5p despite the VAT change. For a household that charges overnight and uses little daytime electricity, Intelligent Go is still the better deal; for one with a heat pump or a home office, the peak rate now matters more than the EV line.

E.ON Next Drive’s peak rate also moved above the cap, to 32.36p, while British Gas and Scottish Power trimmed theirs. The tariff comparison models the whole bill, and the best-tariff guide walks through the trade-off.

Ofgem price cap

  1. 26.32p/kWh (was 26.11p)
  2. 26.11p/kWh

EV tariffs are not capped, but suppliers reprice them on the cap’s quarterly cycle. The January 2027 cap is announced in late November.

How the tracker works

One source of truth, checked in the open.

Every rate on this site, from the tariff pages to the cost tables in the vehicle guides, is read from one fact table with a source URL and a checked-on date per figure. The tracker is a dated log of changes to that table. A test in the site’s build fails if a rate changes without a dated entry, so the log cannot quietly drift from the figures you see elsewhere.

Sources are the supplier’s own tariff page, or Octopus’s public product API where it publishes the exact rate behind a “from” price. The log began on 15 July 2026; we do not reconstruct earlier history. Each entry’s date is the day we verified it. The methodology page covers how the rest of the site is checked.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Every tracked tariff is re-verified against the supplier's published rate, or Octopus's product API, at least at each quarterly price-cap change and whenever a supplier announces a new EV product. The current figures were checked on 30 September 2026. The date next to each entry is the day we verified the change, which can be a few days after the supplier made it.
