OVO Charge Anytime vs Octopus Intelligent Go: Flexibility or Lower Cost?

The short answer

Octopus Intelligent Go is the lower-cost default when its managed six-hour charging allowance fits your week. OVO Charge Anytime is the flexibility option when you need to plug in at changing times, or when a monthly plan's public-charging voucher and mileage allowance match your actual use.

The pay-as-you-go rates are not close: 14p/kWh for eligible OVO-managed charging, against 8p/kWh for Intelligent Go. OVO does not need one fixed overnight window. Octopus is cheaper, but its managed EV charging is capped at six hours in each midday-to-midday period.

What the annual model says

On the site's shared assumptions, OVO pay as you go produces £400 of annual EV electricity. Intelligent Go produces £229. The whole-home totals are £1,336 and £1,257 respectively.

The OVO product does not behave like a simple two-rate household tariff. Eligible smart charging is measured and credited. Urgent charging, plan overages and electricity outside the managed session use the normal home rate. That makes a straight rate table useful but incomplete.

OVO pay as you go or a monthly plan

Pay as you go is the cleanest home-only comparison. You pay for measured smart charging at an effective 14p/kWh, subject to OVO's rules and monthly credit cap.

The monthly plans replace per-kWh simplicity with a package. Current options combine a home-mileage allowance, an annual public-charging voucher and additional benefits. The plan only wins when the household uses what it pays for. A driver who charges almost entirely at home should compare the annual subscription with their measured kWh. A driver who regularly uses public networks can give the voucher real value.

Do not count the public voucher at face value if it changes where you charge or expires unused. Do not value a 1,000-mile allowance if the car covers 500 miles.

Scheduling in daily life

OVO Charge Anytime

Set the time the car must be ready in the OVO Charge app. OVO chooses charging periods within that schedule. A separate vehicle or charger timer can conflict with the supplier schedule, so OVO recommends removing it.

This is useful for shift workers, cars shared across a household and drivers who cannot consistently plug in before an overnight window begins. Urgent Charge restores immediacy, but uses the normal home rate.

Intelligent Go

Set a target and ready-by time in the Octopus app. An eligible vehicle or charger lets Octopus manage the session. Every current UK Tesla can use the vehicle route if the account and car pass the live eligibility check.

The base window is 11:30pm–5:30am. Allocated slots can appear elsewhere, but since May 2026 the managed EV allocation is capped at six hours per 24-hour period measured midday to midday. Large-battery, high-mileage drivers should check that limit against the energy they need.

Charger compatibility

Both products need a communication route for managed charging. The Ohme Home Pro is a useful starting point because it supports supplier-led scheduling across several tariffs. Vehicle integrations can remove the need to buy around one supplier, particularly for Tesla owners.

Compatibility lists change. Check the exact EV model, model year, charger and software route with the chosen supplier before switching or buying hardware.

The verdict

Intelligent Go wins a pure home-charging cost comparison. OVO wins a narrower problem: charging times move around, a fixed window is routinely inconvenient, or the monthly bundle replaces public charging spend the driver already incurs.

That makes the decision behavioural rather than ideological. Review the last three months of mileage, home kWh and public charging. Put the measured pattern into the tariff comparison calculator, then choose the product that fits it without heroic scheduling assumptions.
