Am I Eligible for the OZEV Grant?

Answer 3 quick questions to find out if you qualify for up to £500 off your charger installation.

What type of property do you live in?

This is the main factor in OZEV grant eligibility.

Eligibility

Who Can Claim the OZEV Grant?

You CAN claim if you are
  • A renter (any property type) with landlord permission
  • A flat owner (leasehold or share of freehold)
  • A landlord installing for tenants
  • A small business (<250 employees)
You CANNOT claim if you
  • Own a house (detached, semi, terraced, bungalow)
  • Don't have off-street parking
  • Don't own an eligible EV

You also need dedicated off-street parking and an OZEV-approved installer. The installer handles all grant paperwork — you never apply to OZEV yourself.

Savings

How Much Will You Save?

The grant covers 75% of the total cost (charger + installation), capped at £500. The breakpoint is £667 — any installation costing £667 or more qualifies for the full £500. Since most installations cost £800–1,200, the majority of eligible claimants receive the full amount.

What changed in April 2026?

The grant increased from £350 to £500 on 1 April 2026, and was extended until 31 March 2027. The 75% rule threshold moved from £467 to £667. Eligibility criteria remain unchanged.

Step by step

How to Claim the OZEV Grant

1

Check your eligibility

Confirm you meet the criteria: you must be a renter, flat owner, or landlord with an eligible electric vehicle and dedicated off-street parking. Homeowners of houses are not eligible.

2

Get a quote from an approved installer

You must use an OZEV-approved installer. They'll visit your property, assess the installation, and provide a quote. The installer handles all grant paperwork — you don't apply to OZEV yourself.

3

Accept the quote and provide your details

Once you accept, your installer submits your details to OZEV. You'll receive an email from OZEV with an online form for your property and vehicle details.

4

Wait for OZEV approval

OZEV reviews your application. Once approved, your installer has 90 days to complete the installation.

5

Installation and payment

Your installer completes the work and submits the claim to OZEV. The grant (up to £500) is deducted from your bill — you only pay the remaining balance.

Grant Guide by Situation

For Renters

If you rent your home — whether it's a flat, house, or any other property type — you can claim the £500 grant. You'll need written permission from your landlord before installation.

The charger stays with the property when you move out. Some renters negotiate with their landlord to split the remaining cost, since the charger adds value to the property.

Your landlord doesn't need to pay anything or be involved beyond giving consent. If your landlord wants to claim the grant themselves, there's a separate landlord grant available.

For Flat Owners

Flat owners (leasehold or share of freehold) are eligible. You'll need freeholder or management company consent and a dedicated off-street parking space.

Flats often require longer cable runs, which increases installation costs. The good news: higher costs mean you're more likely to receive the full £500 grant.

If the cable passes through communal areas, you may need additional consents. Your OZEV-approved installer can advise.

For Landlords

Landlords can claim up to £500 per chargepoint socket, plus up to £30,000 for supporting infrastructure (electrical upgrades, groundwork, etc.).

Installing EV chargers adds value to your rental property and makes it more attractive to the growing number of EV drivers. The grant significantly reduces the upfront cost.

Your OZEV-approved installer handles the entire application process on your behalf.

Tips for Maximising Your Grant

Get multiple quotes

OZEV-approved installers vary significantly in their installation charges. Compare at least 2–3 quotes.

Check energy company incentives

Some providers like Octopus Energy and British Gas offer additional cashback or charger discounts.

Consider total cost of ownership

A slightly pricier charger with smart tariff integration can save hundreds per year on electricity.

No rush — you have until March 2027

The £500 grant runs until 31 March 2027. Take time to compare options and get the best deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the OZEV grant if I own a house?
No. The household grant is only for renters and flat owners. If you own a house (detached, semi-detached, or terraced), you'll need to pay the full installation cost yourself.
When does the OZEV grant increase to £500?
The new £500 grant cap takes effect from 1 April 2026. Installations completed before that date receive the previous £350 grant.
Has the OZEV grant deadline been extended?
Yes. The grant has been extended from 31 March 2026 to 31 March 2027, giving eligible applicants another full year to claim.
Does the 75% rule still apply?
Yes. The grant covers 75% of total installation cost, capped at £500. The full £500 applies to any installation costing £667 or more.
Can I claim the OZEV grant for more than one charger?
You can claim for one grant per eligible parking space. If your property has multiple dedicated off-street spaces, you could potentially claim for multiple chargers.
Do I need to own the EV when I apply?
Yes. You must be the registered keeper of an eligible electric vehicle at the time of application. All Tesla models qualify.
Can my landlord apply for the OZEV grant instead of me?
Yes. There's a separate landlord grant covering up to £500 per chargepoint socket, plus up to £30,000 for supporting infrastructure like electrical upgrades.
What happens to the OZEV grant if I move house?
The grant is tied to the property, not you. If you move, the charger stays. You could potentially claim again at your new property if it's eligible.
Is the Tesla Wall Connector eligible for the OZEV grant?
No. The Tesla Wall Connector is not OZEV-approved, so you cannot claim the £500 grant. Alternatives like the Ohme Home Pro, Easee One, and Wallbox Pulsar Max are all approved and work perfectly with Teslas.
What is the cheapest EV charger after the OZEV grant?
The Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 starts from just £162 after the £500 grant. The Ohme ePod starts from £209 and adds smart tariff integration.
How long does the OZEV grant take to process?
Your OZEV-approved installer handles the entire application. Approval typically takes a few working days. The grant is paid directly to the installer — you just pay the reduced price.
Should I wait until April 2026 to install?
If you can wait, yes — you'll receive £500 instead of £350, saving an extra £150. Most installers are booking 3–6 weeks ahead, so getting quotes now means installation will likely fall after April anyway.
